Introduction

Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) play pivotal roles in the various health care professions. They provide invaluable information for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. Since its establishment in 2009, the MLS educational programme of National University-Sudan (NUSU) equips students with essential knowledge and techniques to develop their future professional career in diagnosis of diseases and/or performing medical research

The faculty of MLS currently offers:
1.      A four year Bachelor (Honours) in five key disciplines including:
·         Clinical Chemistry
·         Microbiology
·         Haematology and Immunohaematology
·         Histopathology and Cytology
·         Parasitology and Medical Entomology
2.      Postgraduate programmes including:
·         Higher Diploma in MLS
·         Master by course and dissertation in MLS in:
o   Clinical Chemistry
o   Microbiology and Infection Control
o   Haematology and Immunohaematology
o   Histopathology and Cytology
o   Parasitology and Medical Entomology
·         Master and PhD by research in:
o   Clinical Chemistry
o   Microbiology

·         Graduate competent medical laboratory scientists

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, the graduate will be able to:
·         Apply principles of safety
·         Communicate effectively and ethically with patients, co-patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professions, and with public
·         Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures
·         Collect clinical specimens
·         Prepare and analyze clinical specimens
·         Perform analytical tests on clinical specimens
·         Recognize factors influencing procedures and results
·         Perform, monitor and assure quality within set standards
·         Assure preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments
·       Conduct researches on common diseases prevailing in Sudan
